Tips for Bringing New Puppy Home

Establish Leadership: Dogs are pack animals and need firm clear leadership. Always project calm, assertive, energy. They do not follow instability. They are not human. Too much affection, even for little ones, can confuse a dog.

Do not over handle and keep 4 paws on the floor most times.

Crate Training: Do not be afraid of using a crate. It is the most effective way to housetrain. Keep in high trafficked area of house during the day, bedroom at night.

Bring puppy to same bathroom spot every day and go with her. Do not pick her up, but lead her out on leash and collar. Use same prompt and PRAISE when she goes.

Feeding: Buy the best quality you can afford. Limit dry food. Look for whole ingredients. This will cut down on vet bills in the future.

Teach puppy to sit for food.

Feed only when dog is calm.

Do not leave food down for more than 15 minutes.

Do not use plastic dishes.

Create feeding and bathroom schedule and stick to it.

Items to have: ID tags, Simple solution or Nature’s Miracle, soft collar or harness and thin leash (not retractable).

Small chew toys. Give only up to 2 toys at a time. Rotate toys.

Brush and shedding blade (if 2 coated).

Remember: Even though you are bringing an animal in to a human family she is a DOG, not a human. To fulfill her, you must relate to her as a dog.
